Numeral and Anrok both aim to simplify sales tax. Both are newer, more modern alternatives to Avalara, which has long been the established, expensive solution.

However, there are important differences between Numeral and Anrok in terms of price, features, and accountability.

Price is the biggest differentiator: Numeral charges when work is completed, while Anrok charges per market per month, regardless of whether a return is due. Since a market is defined as any jurisdiction where you have a tax obligation and must register, this can add up quickly.

This guide explains the price differences, how each solution works, and how they differ, so you can find the solution that's right for you.

Numeral vs. Anrok pricing

Anrok and Numeral structure pricing differently. While both services offer end-to-end compliance solutions, including monitoring, registration, tax calculation, and filing, the cost structure is very different.

How much does Numeral cost?

Numeral’s pricing is simple. Nexus monitoring is free. Its Professional plan charges $75 per filing and $150 per registration, and its Enterprise plan is custom.

Nexus means you have enough connections with a state that the state can require you to collect sales tax on its behalf. You can establish nexus in multiple ways, with economic nexus and physical nexus being the two most common.

When you connect your billing and HR systems, Numeral will monitor your sales tax exposure across every revenue stream and team location. You get instant notifications as soon as you approach or cross a nexus threshold in any state, country, or applicable home-rule jurisdiction.

The free tier also includes a review of past liability.

Numeral also offers a Professional and Enterprise plan:

  • Professional includes free nexus monitoring, automatic registration, and filing/remittance. Numeral creates and monitors a virtual mailbox for you, uses AI to classify products, manages exemption certificates, and provides concierge service backed by our team of sales tax experts.
  • Enterprise is a custom plan that includes everything in Professional, plus global coverage in over 90 countries, consultations with our team of tax lawyers, access to our industry-leading tax engine, and advanced reporting and analytics.

Numeral's Professional plan is pay-as-you-go, with no commitment required. There are no onboarding fees and no recurring monthly fees. The cost is directly based on actual compliance work, at a rate of $75 per filing and $150 per registration.

The Enterprise plan is custom-priced based on your coverage needs.

How much does Anrok cost?

Anrok's pricing starts at $100 per market per month on the Starter plan. Its Custom plan is priced by transaction volume. There is no free plan.

Anrok offers two plan options, Starter and Custom:

  • Starter is $100 per market per month and includes Anrok AI tax intelligence, global exposure monitoring, real-time tax calculation, filing and remittance, and exemption certificate management.
  • Custom is priced based on your needs and includes an advanced data API, address resolution API, advanced integrations, and enhanced exemption certificate management. You will also qualify for priority support.

There is no free plan available with Anrok, and you pay the $100 fee per market regardless of whether Anrok files for you that month or not.

The custom tier is priced based on transaction volume, and Anrok notes that on the Starter plan, sellers with high transaction volumes may be subject to additional fees.

Anrok recently transitioned from an older revenue-based model to a per-market pricing model. Registration is also now included, rather than billed separately.

Numeral vs. Anrok cost at three business sizes

The table below illustrates the cost difference between Numeral and Anrok for different types of businesses so you can better understand how much each option is likely to cost.

Estimates use published list prices and assume every state needs a new registration in year one. Your actual cost depends on filing frequency and plan.

Scenario Numeral Annual Cost
(Filings + First-Year Registrations)
Anrok Annual Cost
(Starter)
SaaS startup, 4 states, all quarterly $1,800 in year one ($1,200 after) $4,800 (Starter)
Direct-to-consumer (DTC) brand, 12 states (9 quarterly, 3 monthly) $7,200 in year one ($5,400 after) $14,400 (Starter)
SaaS company, 25 states (20 monthly, 5 quarterly) $23,250 in year one ($19,500 after) $30,000 (Starter)

Sellers with monthly sales tax due dates in most states will incur the most costs from Numeral because Numeral charges per filing. However, most smaller companies aren’t required to file monthly.

With Anrok, sellers pay monthly per market. This often results in higher fees because you pay regardless of whether Anrok is doing work in the market.

Anrok defines a market as any single jurisdiction where you have a tax obligation and need to register and file. Each U.S. state where you're registered counts as one market.

Canadian sales tax is different. Canada’s GST/HST is a single market, but British Columbia, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan each count as a separate market because each has its own provincial sales tax. Quebec's QST is also a separate market.

EU filing through the One Stop Shop counts as one market.

Numeral vs. Anrok features

Both Numeral and Anrok are end-to-end tax compliance solutions, so many of their features overlap. Here are the key features of both services:

Nexus monitoring

  • Numeral: Numeral provides free ongoing economic and physical nexus monitoring with no commitment or contract required. You will receive an alert before you cross any nexus threshold.
  • Anrok: Anrok offers nexus monitoring on paid plans only.

Both tools offer integrations with shopping channels and billing software to monitor nexus, and both offer HR integrations to monitor when remote employees establish physical nexus.

Registration

  • Numeral: Numeral offers automatic registration for $150 per registration.
  • Anrok: Registration is included in the per-market fee at no additional cost. Anrok also offers automatic registration when it detects your business has established nexus in a new jurisdiction.

Reviews indicate that some users have faced registration challenges with Anrok. On G2, "bumpy tax registration" is one of Anrok's most-cited complaints, with 30 mentions.

Tax calculation

  • Numeral: Offers real-time tax calculations through integrations and an API. Numeral is known for accuracy in calculating tax on both SaaS and physical goods, as Numeral's tax calculation engine uses AI product classifications to map every product to the correct tax category.
  • Anrok: Also offers real-time tax calculation through integrations and an API. Anrok is known for its accuracy in calculating sales tax on SaaS, a complex and evolving area as rules for the taxability of SaaS change. For example, California's SB 122 will begin taxing SaaS on Jan. 1, 2027.

Rooftop-level accuracy is critical in calculating taxes. For example, Texas taxes 80% of the price of SaaS, while neighboring Oklahoma generally doesn't tax SaaS.  And in home-rule states, you may even need to follow different tax rules from one county to another.

Filing and remittance

  • Numeral: Numeral autofiles taxes for you based on each state's filing schedule. You pay for Numeral's service only when Numeral files a return on your behalf and a tax expert reviews every return before submission. Numeral also provides a virtual mailbox for state notices.
  • Anrok: Anrok also autofiles for you, and an expert reviews each return. However, Anrok charges per market for all markets you are registered in, even if you do not file in a specific month. Many companies file only quarterly or even semiannually or annually, so you may be paying for a jurisdiction where Anrok files irregularly.

Exemption certificates

  • Numeral: Numeral collects and stores exemption certificates for resellers and other qualified customers exempt from sales tax on transactions. Exemption certificate management is included on its paid plan.
  • Anrok: Anrok includes exemption certificate management on Starter, with "enhanced" management available on the Custom plan.

International VAT and GST

  • Numeral: Numeral offers global coverage in 90+ countries on the Enterprise plan.
  • Anrok: Anrok offers coverage in over 150 countries. Each country counts as a new market and incurs an additional cost, though EU filing through the One Stop Shop counts as one.

G2 reviews have identified VAT reporting and refunds as a top complaint area for Anrok, with 34 mentions among users.

Numeral vs. Anrok integrations

  • Numeral: Numeral offers over 40 native integrations, with a heavy emphasis on ecommerce marketplaces and billing platforms.
  • Anrok: Anrok also offers over 40 native integrations, but its catalog is more heavily focused on ERP and HR systems.

Both companies integrate with:

  • Shopify
  • Stripe
  • Chargebee
  • QuickBooks
  • Xero
  • NetSuite
  • WooCommerce
  • Rippling (HR)

Numeral vs. Anrok support and guarantees

Both Numeral and Anrok offer support from tax experts. Numeral offers concierge support including consultations with tax experts. Anrok also offers support on all plans, with priority support on Custom.

However, one of the biggest differentiators is that Numeral guarantees its work, while Anrok does not.

  • Numeral: The Numeral Guarantee covers penalties and interest if your sales tax is not paid on time.
  • Anrok: Anrok does not provide a publicly available guarantee. Liability seems to remain with your company.

Numeral or Anrok: Which is right for your business?

So which service is right for you?

Choose Numeral if:

  • You want free nexus monitoring.
  • You want predictable pay-as-you-go costs instead of a monthly fee regardless of actual work performed.
  • Your company sells physical products on Shopify, Amazon, or other marketplaces, or you offer SaaS.
  • You want a guarantee that covers penalties and interest if filings are late.
  • You'd rather pay for filings as they happen than a monthly fee for every market.

Choose Anrok if:

  • You're a VC-backed SaaS company with a complex billing stack that includes usage-based pricing or credit memos.
  • You want deep SaaS-specific tooling.
  • You need help with VAT compliance in a broader range of countries.

Many ecommerce brands and cost-conscious SaaS companies registered in a small number of states, or with quarterly, semiannual, or annual filing obligations, will find Numeral as a more affordable alternative to Anrok.
