Step-by-step process for filing Vermont’s sales tax

Let’s get right into the process of filing sales tax in Vermont.

Step 1: Log into Vermont's online tax system

The first step in filing your Vermont sales tax return is to log into the state's online tax system at https://www.myvtax.vermont.gov/_/

If you don't have a username and password, click on "Click Here to Register" and follow the instructions to create an account.

If you need assistance with obtaining a sales tax permit, setting up your account, or filing sales taxes, Numeral offers a service that handles everything for you, end-to-end.

Step 2: Select the account for filing

Once you've logged in, you will be directed to your homepage. From there, click on the account for which you want to file a sales tax return.

Step 3: Choose the filing period

After selecting the appropriate account, click on "File Return" for the specific period you wish to file.

This will initiate the process of entering your sales data and submitting your return.

Step 4: Enter sales data

On the next screen, enter your total gross sales and non-taxable sales for the filing period. If you need to enter a local option tax, click on the link titled "Click here to add Local Option Taxes."

This will allow you to input the necessary information for any applicable local taxes. Once you have finished entering your sales data, click "Next" to proceed to the review stage.

Step 5: Add attachment filings

If you have any attachments that need to be included with your return, you can add them at this point in the process. This may include supporting documentation or additional forms required by the state.

Step 6: Make a payment

After reviewing your return, it's time to make a payment.

Enter your banking information, select the payment date, and specify the amount you wish to pay. If you prefer to mail in your payment, you can print a voucher by checking the box at the bottom of the screen.

Finally, review all the information you've entered, provide your name and telephone number, and submit your return. Upon successful submission, you will receive a confirmation number, which we recommend saving for your records. It's also a good practice to save a copy of your return for future reference.
