Step-by-step process for filing sales tax in Missouri

Let’s get right into the steps for filing sales tax in Missouri. You can skip to step #2 if you already have an account with Missouri’s DOR.

Step 1: Create an online tax filing account

Register for a sales tax permit and create an account on the Missouri Department of Revenue's MyTax Missouri website to begin filing your Missouri sales tax return.

The registration process can be completed entirely online. Once you've provided all the necessary information, you'll receive your login credentials via email.

When registering, be sure to share all the details requested by the portal to obtain your username and password.

This information typically includes your business name, address, contact information, and the type of goods or services you sell.

Step 2: Login into your account

Once you have your login credentials, go to the MyTax Missouri website and sign in using your User ID and password.

If you've forgotten your password, you can reset it on the login page. To protect your business's financial information, it's essential to keep your login information secure and not share it with anyone else.

Step 3: Start your tax return

After successfully logging into your MyTax Missouri account, you will be directed to the state's dashboard.

On this page, you will see a list of the tax types your business is registered for, which you can file online.

To begin filing your sales tax return, navigate to the "Online Transactions" section and select "File a Form." This will take you to the appropriate page where you can start entering your sales tax information.

Step 4: Enter tax details

Upon selecting "File a Form," you will be directed to a new window where you'll enter your sales tax return information.

The system will automatically populate your business name based on the information provided during registration. Next, you'll need to select your account type from the available options.

Once you've chosen your account type, the system will fill in your account ID and form number. Select your form type and the filing period for submitting the sales tax return. After completing these selections, click the "Next" button to continue.

You'll notice three tabs on the following screen: Return Header, Location Data, and Totals. The Return Header tab displays your taxpayer information and the return details you entered in the previous step.

The Location Data tab will show a list of your registered business locations. This is where you'll enter your sales tax data for each location.

Click on the Location Data tab and input the required information, such as gross sales, taxable sales, and any applicable deductions or exemptions for each of your registered locations. Be sure to double-check your entries for accuracy. Once you've completed entering the data, click the "Calculate" button.

After calculating your location data, navigate to the Totals tab.

This tab will display a summary of your return totals based on the information you provided in the Location Data tab. Review the totals to ensure they match your records.

If everything appears correct, scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on the "Proceed to Summary" button.

This will take you to a summary screen displaying the return you've just completed. Take a moment to review the summary for any errors or discrepancies.

If you need to make changes, select the "Back" button to return to the previous screens and update your information. If you're satisfied with the return summary, select the "Next" button to continue processing your return.

On the final screen, you will be asked to acknowledge that you can file the return for the selected account. Once you submit your return, you will receive a confirmation number. Keep this number for your records as proof of your filing. You will also receive an email containing the confirmation number. To return to your MyTax Missouri account, select the "Return Home" button.

Step 5: Submit payment

After submitting your sales tax return, you should print or save a copy of the confirmation page for your records. If you need to remit payment for the sales tax you've collected, click the "Make a Payment Now" button.

This will direct you to the payment processing page, where you can enter your payment information and complete the transaction. If you prefer to pay later, you can select the "Back to Home" button and process your payment before the due date.

Step 6: Finalize filing

Congratulations! You've now completed the process of filing your Missouri sales tax return. However, there are a few things to remember after submitting your return.

If you forgot to print or save a copy of your sales tax return, don't worry. You can easily access it from your MyTax Missouri account. Navigate to the dashboard and select "Saved Items / Transaction History" from the "Online Transactions" drop-down menu. You'll see a list of your recently filed returns and payments on the next page.

To view a specific return, click on the confirmation number link. To view a payment, click on the payment amount link. From here, you can save or print these documents for your records.

Local sales tax in Missouri

In addition to the Missouri state sales tax rate of 4.225%, businesses in Missouri may be subject to local sales taxes imposed by cities, counties, or special taxing districts. These local taxes can vary significantly, resulting in combined sales tax rates of up to 10.35% in some areas.

Here are the current sales tax rates for some major cities in Missouri:

City Combined Sales Tax Rate
Kansas City 9.975%
St. Louis 9.68%

Knowing the specific sales tax rate for your business location is essential, as this will determine the total amount of sales tax you need to collect from your customers and remit to the state.
