How to File Sales Tax in Louisiana: Step-by-Step

Let's go over how to file sales tax in Louisiana online through the Department of Revenue site, with step-by-step instructions.

Step 1: Create an Online Account

The first step is registering for a Louisiana sales tax permit to collect sales tax legally. You can register online through the Louisiana Department of Revenue's website:

1) Go to the Louisiana Department of Revenue website and click on LaTAP below the banner in the middle section to start your registration.

2) On the LaTAP login page, click Sign Up on the right of the page.

3) Select your Taxpayer Type.

4) For most small businesses, choose the "Business" option.

5) On the Introduction page, enter your business details like Email ID, password, security code, etc. to create your account.

6) Once registered, you will receive a confirmation mail with your User ID and password.

Registering online makes starting your sales tax compliance easier with pre-filled industry-specific returns. Ensure all details submitted are accurate during signup. Maintain your user ID and password safely for all future filings.

Step 2: Login to Your Account

1) Go to the Louisiana Department of Revenue's LaTAP login page.

2) Enter your User ID and Password received during registration.

3) Enter the randomly generated 6-digit Security Code shown.

4) Read through the Terms and Conditions and check the box to agree.

5) Click Confirm.

You will now access your Louisiana Department of Revenue account online to manage your sales tax filings and payments.

Step 3: Start Your Tax Return

1) Click on Action Center from the top menu.

2) Select File Return from the dropdown options.

3) Choose General Sales and Use Tax when asked about Motor Vehicle Sales tax.

4) The General Sales and Use Tax return form will open. Start filling in all business and tax details accurately.

5) Complete each section and click Next to advance in the multi-page online return. Key details required:

  • Gross sales
  • Allowable exemptions
  • Net taxable sales
  • Calculated sales tax
  • Tax credits

6) Answer whether you have late returns, deductions, or credits to carry forward. Provide details as applicable.

7) Select No for sections like Direct Mail, Vehicles, and Specialized returns if they do not apply to your business.

8) Complete the Paid Preparer's information if someone helped prepare your return. Ensure they sign the return and provide their PTIN.

The step-by-step sections in the General Sales and Use online return cover all required tax details needed to file accurately.

Step 4: Enter Tax Payment Details

Once you complete entering all tax return details:

  1. Select the applicable payment option—eCheck or ePay.
  2. For eCheck payments, provide bank account details to pull the tax amount owed directly.
  3. For credit card payments, enter card information and submit payment through the secure ePay gateway.
  4. Select the Pay by Check option if paying later by check/cash. Print payment vouchers for the correct amount due with your return confirmation.

Ensure any prior overpayments are adjusted before making the tax payment—print payment confirmations after successful payments. And note that you need to maintain proof of accurate and timely tax payments made for your records.

Step 5: Review and Submit

Once all information is entered:

1) Click Review and Submit on the last page.

2) Carefully review the drafted return again for accuracy—double-check amounts, vendor details, calculations, etc.

3) Update any information if needed and recheck carefully before final submission.

4) Enter your account Password when prompted, and click OK.

5) The return is then securely e-filed with the Louisiana Department of Revenue.

After submission, you cannot amend the return online. Print return summaries for your files before exiting. Retain copies of complete, accurate returns for at least 4 years for tax audit purposes.

Step 6: Finalize Filing

On return submission, you will see 3 options:

  1. Click on Printable View to save final PDF copies for business records.
  2. If paying now, click Make Payment and follow the prompts to pay the amount owed.
  3. Print Payment Voucher copies for processing checks per established procedures if paying later.

Double-check if printable returns and payment vouchers show accurate, matched information before logging out. Maintain part or full copies of printed returns and payments based on your record retention policy.
