Step-by-step process for filing sales tax in Idaho

Let’s get into the exact step-by-step process for filing your sales tax return in Idaho.

Step 1: Create an online account

The first step in filing your Idaho sales tax return is to register for an Idaho sales tax permit. This can be done by applying through the Idaho State Tax Commission's website

Obtaining a sales tax permit is necessary for legally collecting sales tax from customers and receiving your unique tax account number.

Once you have navigated to the website, click on the sign-up button. You will be presented with two options: YES or NO. To obtain a TAP Code, click NO to proceed.

Proceed to provide all the required information and click Submit or Next, until you have completed all the necessary fields requested by the website.

Step 2: Login into your account

After successfully creating your account, access the Taxpayer Access Point (TAP) system using your credentials.

TAP serves as Idaho's online portal for managing sales tax accounts, filing returns, and making payments. This centralized system streamlines the process, making it easier for businesses to stay compliant with state tax laws.

Step 3: Start your tax return

Upon logging into your TAP home page, you will see a tax account for your sales and use tax. It may take a couple of days for this account to appear after registering for a temporary permit online.

To begin filing your return, locate the Sales & Use Tax account and click on the "File/View Returns" option, rather than "Make a Payment." This will direct you to the appropriate window to start your tax return.

On the next screen, find the return you need to file, which will be labeled with the month of the event and SUT 856 as the return type.

Click on the "File Now" button corresponding to this return to proceed.

Step 4: Enter tax details

In this step, you will need to provide detailed information about your total sales and taxable sales during the filing period. Calculate the total amount of sales tax collected from customers based on the applicable state and local tax rates.

For those filing with a Temporary Permit, enter the reference number located at the top right of your temporary seller's permit.

The line items on your paper may not match the line items in TAP. After entering all the necessary information, click submit and then ok to proceed.

At this point, you can print out the confirmation for your records. If you didn't owe sales tax or plan to pay by check or money order, you have completed the filing process in TAP.

Step 5: Submit payment

If you owe sales tax and wish to pay online, click on the "Make a Payment" button. TAP offers two payment options: credit card or bank account.

While there is a service charge for credit card transactions, there is no service charge for using your bank account.

To pay using your bank account, choose "Direct Debit" in the Payment Channel area. Fill in your bank account information and retype the payment amount in the Confirm Amount field to ensure accuracy. Double-check your work and click Submit, followed by OK in the window that appears.

Upon successful payment, you will see a Confirmation screen. It is recommended to print out this confirmation for your records.

It is important to note that you can only use three temporary seller's permits in 12 months.

If you require more than three permits, you will need to obtain a regular permit.

Step 6: Finalize filing

Before submitting your sales tax return and payment, review all details for accuracy. Once you have confirmed that all information is correct, submit your return and payment. You will receive a confirmation for your records, indicating successful compliance with Idaho's sales tax laws.
