new projects

10/1/2005 Welcome to the 'New' Projects Page at Numeral

John F. Simon, Jr.
Anyone who has paid any attention to this website over the past 4 years must be very surprised to see that this 'new' projects page has finally been updated. Sorry for the wait. I have had plenty of new projects but this page and the website have not been among them. Funny thing about how much work it is to keep a website fresh.

I encourage you to contact me with any questions or feedback.

Mobility Agents

My software and artist's book documenting the drawing tools I started writing back in 1989 is finally being published by Printed Matter, Inc. and The Whitney Museum of American Art. As part of the launch I have set up a special 'gate page' for the Whitney's artport. The gate pages let you 'look inside the book' like you can on amazon.com but in this case the pages are interactive java applets.

I really liked doing this project. It was fun to write and it was the realization of an idea I have had for a long time. Not to mention that I wrote a lot of it at my in-laws kitchen table in Kailua, Hawaii. I love the idea of a book where each page is software. Each page can encompass a complete thought with variations played out for you or left for you to discover. I really want to write a Volume 2 so I hope I can find a publisher.

The front gallery where my laser cut plexi will be hung in the windows
I am having a show this month at the museum in my hometown of Alexandria, Louisiana. We leave soon to install and it opens on October 14 at the Alexandria Museum of Art. I am showing about 40 works including most of my LCD screen works and even PDA which doesn't get out much. I also created a set of new work for the windows in the front gallery - 10 laser cut plexi pieces.
I am making a laser cut and engraved plexi piece as a commission for the Aldrich Museum, a terrific institution in Ridgefield, Connecticut. More pictures as this multiple is published in early December.
