new projects

12/12/1 Welcome to the New New Numeral

John F. Simon, Jr.
Welcome to the first major upgrade to my website in many years. I'm so happy to be finally updating my site! I would like to acknowledge Elizabeth Simon, Carrie Pollack, Marianna Baer, Russell Calabrese and Carla Snow Snow for their contributions to the design and production of this update.

I have been working on projects other than net art for a few years now. They are mostly the LCD panels that are shown in the "art appliances" section and discussed below. I stopped doing web projects when the offline digital work became more economically successful. But my explorations of net art aren't over yet. I will be releasing a new piece of net art in the coming months and will introduce it here in the 'new projects' section.

I am putting new energy into the web site because of how important the web is now to introducing people to my work. The site is an extended resume where anyone can learn about my art. I encourage you to contact me with any questions or feedback.

PDA
2001
There is a new section documenting the artwork I make using LCD panels and software. It all started when I got my 'Every Icon' to run on an Apple PowerBook 170 that I bought on eBay for about $200. After mounting the screen on a wooden frame and installing the software, I realized there was a tremendous qualitative difference between seeing Every Icon in a browser on a laptop and seeing it isolated in the wall mounted display. I can't explain this difference but I have acknowleded it and used this quality to guide me in creating more wall mounted displays.

I have made seven different pieces so far and will make at least one more for my show in May at the Sandra Gering Gallery. As you'll see, the first few panels had very simple frames. But for my newest piece called 'PDA', I use my laser to fabricate the plastic and inlaid laminate.

'Complicated Boundary' is laser cut from acrylic and for sale in the Souvenir Shop
The other big new addition to to web site is the Souvenir Shop

The Souvenir Shop is a project to explore alternative distribution and business models for art production. I am looking at this as an opportunity to explore a revenue model that is very different from the more expensive LCD screens sold through the gallery. Is there a possibility that my work could be owned and seen by a much larger audience? I hope so.

I have really enjoyed selling Every Icon for $20 to over 100 collectors. My email interactions and feedback let me know how much fun people have with the project. I look forward to more exchanges with the new items for sale.
