Sandra Gering Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of new work by Vincent Szarek from 27 March — 24 April 2004.

In his fiberglass sculptures, Vincent Szarek exploits the flashy, fetishistic sensuality of custom car bodies, while at the same time referencing the understatement of minimalism. Szarek has created a vocabulary of curvaceous forms and saturated, glittering colors that differ from minimalism in terms of an emphasis on the "custom" as opposed to the "serial". This customization results from a complex process that involves precise computer-based design and hands-on fabrication and finishing.

For Szarek’s third solo exhibition at Sandra Gering Gallery, he pushes the relationship between art and auto body by imbedding a working car stereo into one of his sculptures, distilling the car to its extraneous elements of seduction — curves, color, and music. Without wheels or an engine, Szarek captures the culture epitomized by movies like The Fast and the Furious, and the television show Monster Garage.

Szarek’s work is also exhibited at Galerie Almine Rech, Paris, and Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac, Salzburg. He recently had a solo exhibition at PS1/MoMA, Long Island City.
