Sandra Gering Gallery is pleased to present the first solo exhibition of Korean artist Sang-ah Choi. Included in the exhibition will be multi-paneled paintings and a limited edition, "pop-up" catalogue, with an essay by Jonathan Fineberg, author of Art Since 1940: Strategies of Being.

The catalogue is a collaboration between the artist, the essayist, and a team of graphic designers from the University of Illinois, from which Choi recently received her M.F.A. In the essay, Fineberg writes:

It is at the periphery of our logical understanding that art begins, and no challenge to our conceptual grasp of the world is more relevant today than that of digital travel in the landscape of images. In the paintings of Sang-ah Choi we probe the new realities of this image world of globalization, of the leveling of culture, commodity fetishism, and simulation. But it is not a glum vision. Her control over the visual practice of discovery and her analysis in form of the nuance and change and possibilities embedded in this destabilized environment emboldens us to follow her in an optimistic adventure; Šshe finds a garden of pleasures in the unfolding of the unexpected realities of this newly commonplace experience.

Choi's multi-paneled paintings reflect the confluence of traditional Korean and Western ideals present in her Korean upbringing. The intertwining of cultures is represented by intricate, overlapping imagery created in resin, ink, and glitter, among other materials. Some of Choi's recurrent motifs are archetypal images of Venus and Aphrodite, bamboo stalks, and bubbles. Her imagery explodes into three-dimensional form in the handmade pop-up inserts created by Choi for the limited edition catalogue. The catalogue will also be available in a four-color format without the pop-ups.

Gallery hours are Tuesday - Saturday, 10am - 6pm. For further information contact Marianna Baer at 646.336.7183 or marianna@geringgallery.com.
