5 Senses & Blobjects 18 February - 20 March 1999

Sandra Gering Gallery is pleased to present our first exhibition with Karim Rashid, from 18 February through 20 March 1999. Rashid is an artist and industrial designer who was recently named 1998 Young Designer of the Year by Brooklyn Museum. His design work has received a great deal of attentionand has been included in numerous museum exhibtions. This work will be the first installation to emphasize the fine art aspects of Rashid's work.

The exhibition will present a series of objects entitled "5 Senses." These limited edition ceramic slip-cast stoneware sculptures are designed to interlock or stand freely; doubly perceived as either purely aesthetic objects or functional vases. Displayed en masse and while interlocked, the sculptures have a monumental look that is slowly fragmented with each degree of separation. The group of objects together is an investigation into the process of rearrangement and variable order. Brilliant interior contrasting glazes reflect on neighboring sculptures, further highlighting the relationship between negative and positive space.

Also included in the installation will be organic vacuum-molded polyethylene sculptures, entitled, "Blobjects." The exploration is of a single production process of a formable material in congruence with the human form. Blobjects destabilize the notion of materialism by proposing large biomorphic volumes that are basically hollow and transparent. The sculptures can be used as chairs on which seating is flexible with vairous postures suggested on each form.
